Fun Carpentry Webzine and article about a class a took

This past summer I took a class on doing Tangent handrails. It was an amazing class and I learned a ton. Below is a link to the article and I will soon have pictures of the handrail that I just recently finished.

Cold Stone
December 5, 2010
Saturday Ransom and I went to Crowley’s Granite Concepts to spend some time with some kids in the who are in the foster system. Kevin Baurely who is the general sales manager there has started up a non profit to encourage foster kids who are in the system and promote awareness for them. Crowley’s was super generous in donating not only the use of their shop and shop materials but they also had at least 6 staff members there helping out with grinders, polishing wheels, etc. Even the owner was there! There was also a lady there who makes jewelry and had brought in lots of beads, stones, and shiny things for necklaces etc. There were also a couple of artists there doing different types of etching and imprinting on stone remnants. It was amazing to watch these kids take different types of granite and stone that was just cut and with a little bit of time on the polishing wheel create something of beauty. Some of the kids stuck with it for over an hour straight. Ransom and I didn’t get a lot of time to do much polishing but it was fun none the less to see others learning to create and enjoy the fruit of their efforts. It is that time of year where we all to often think of shiny toys and the latest thing that we want and completely neglect to acknowledge all of the truly good things that we have. So today was a day of reflection, a day to look someone in the eye and tell them good job, to see the sparkle in an eye that sees something it has created and takes joy in. Today was a good day.
Starting afresh
November 20, 2010
It is rather humorous that I keep meaning to write on my blog for many reasons… and here it is two years since my last post. The blog originated with me trying to give a pictorial account of a church that we were contracted to take down. Since then I have been to many marketing pitches and talked to quite a few colleagues. Some have talked about the importance of a blog while others seem to view it as just another thing to take up valuable time. My own view is one that lies somewhere in the middle but I also see it as an opportunity. In restarting this effort I see it as an opportunity to connect and reconnect with clients and future clients. I also see it as an avenue for me to visualize and express ideas related to the craft. The last five years we have seen good and bad and I believe have learned a ton in both seasons. The journey, however, continues and hopefully will allow us many more opportunities to continue our education and hone our craft. Here is to another try and hopefully better success at documenting the journey.
